The caves of Gargas
The prehistoric caves of Gargas are an authentic natural space, decorated with drawings dating back thousands of years. They have been listed as historic monuments since 1910. You can see painted and engraved drawings of animals, but its originality lies in the prehistoric handprints made with stencils
To date, they are the European caves with the highest number of handprints, the vast majority of which have missing fingers
The Gargas caves tour is complimented by Nestploria, our digital interpretation center, and an exhibition dedicated to children about the Archeologist's work : Les Explorateurs de la Préhistoire. These two areas are ideal for complementing a visit to the caves, waiting beforehand or perfecting your knowledge afterwards. Admission to the caves also includes free access to Nestploria and the "Explorers of Prehistory" exhibition.
The guided tour of the Gargas caves lasts 50 minutes, via a fully equipped and secure underground route over 200m long (non-slip path, safety barriers on staircases, etc.).A geological beauty, Gargas boasts attractive volumes and some fine concretions.
